Case Study

Tracking Personnel with A2 Analytics

One of the largest privately-held companies in the world and a perennial Engineering News-Record (ENR) top general contractor recognized an opportunity to collect project productivity data efficiently and accurately by tracking personnel, including its employees and subcontractor employees, on construction sites.

The Problem

Track construction site personnel activity

With multiple personnel moving on and off the site throughout the day, management needed a better way to compare project activity to progress against the schedule. While traditional manual clock-in, clock-out procedures and reports have been in place for decades, these simple time-tracking tools do not tell the story of productivity, and they are generally inefficient and inaccurate.

Our Approach

Deploying A2 through pilot program

In a pilot program, Archetype SC’s A2 Analytics was deployed on the construction site and began tracking the movement of individuals. The program utilized two processes: the first being a simple, anonymous on-site, off-site tracking and a more complex and accurate model that utilized Bluetooth badges tied to personal information to determine exactly where individuals were working on the site, how long they were present, and how many hours were spent by area and scope of work.

The Solution

Rugged tracking devices built to last

Archetype SC created a specialized, rugged A2 Analytics device to withstand site rigors. The traditional A2 Analytics device was built to perform in a controlled environment, with a construction environment providing changes in temperature, power supply, and precipitation. Using a stronger casing and adapting the housing allowed for monitoring on the construction site with no issues, taking in millions of data points each day.

The Results

Pilot Program provides influx of data

Following a successful three-month pilot program, the contractor realized an influx of data that illustrated how the site functioned daily, from the instant the first worker stepped foot on the site to the end of the work day.

Detailed data & progress reports

With its sustained use of A2 Analytics, the contractor can flow actual hours worked and reported through A2 Analytics to their BIM and accounting modules, which allows for near real-time progress reports against plan documents with no need for manual entry.

This process saves significant effort and provides a more detailed and up-to-date look at true progress on a job site and creates more accurate estimates as more data is collected.

Equipment tracking with no delays

Use of A2 Analytics to track equipment utilization and location, operator identification, and workplace headcounts is visible through custom dashboards from any of the company’s connected devices. Utilizing A2 Analytics technology and Bluetooth tags, valuable equipment can be tracked for usage and location, allowing the contractor to keep an inventory of its job site without needing to stop progress.

For many tools and machines on a construction site, certifications and licenses are needed by the operator to ensure compliance and safety. Using A2 Analytics and badging tied to a human resources file, the contractor will be able to quickly ensure the operator of heavy machinery is certified and able to safely operate the machine.

Company-wide Custom Dashboards

Custom dashboards on company-wide connected devices ensure that management away from a job site can stay in the loop on how many workers are at a job site, where they are working at any time, and what equipment is being utilized, all with the backing of ultra-precise data.
